It was covered in the classroom when I went through rookie school, but we don't use it in the field. We use triple lays in Sumter.

we dont use horseshoe. it would be more like a r shaped load because of how our bed is set up with our SCBA up in the hosebed.

We used to, but now we pretty much use the triple fold county-wide.

We use the flat load on our LDH and for our 2 1/2. On our 1 3/4 preconnects we use the minute man load that way as we are headed to the door we can flake it off and keep it from having kinks or all jumboed up on the ground also when you get to the front door the nozzle is right in your hand alls you got left is to have the line charged and blow the line out and go.

The first and last time I saw a horseshoe load was when I was a recruit in minimum standards class.

Our department leaves it up to the apparatus captain to decide how he wants the hose loaded on his engine. So far I've oly seen two different loads. Mostly flat loads but some companies go with the triple load. They both have thier pluses and minuses.

We have this lay on our older engine with 2 1/2 hose. This is due to the shape of the hose bed kind of like a odd U-shape with the tank access and front ladder mount in the forward middle of the bed. Other than that it's all flat lay.

we were tought to do it and actually did it in FF I and II, but in my department we use flat loads. I know there is a department or two in the county that does use a horseshoe load though.

It's the triple fold load, and we use it county wide.

It's when you take a preconnect, stretch it out, then fold it to where you have three equal length layers stacked on top of each other, and then loaded as if it was essentially one line.

It can be a pain in the rear to load if you don't have experienced people helping, but it deploys great.

I'll look around later to see if I can find a picture.

Unfortunately I've known that pain all too well. Nothing like humping at a big house fire only to spend a damn half hour afterwards cause you are lacking the aformentioned personnel.

This is probably not the best picture to describe it Lolo, but you can see that the hose has been folded into three sections. You load the three sections as if you were holding just a single section at one time.

triple-lay.jpg

I do have one correction as well. I had originally stated that all of Sumter is using triple loads for their attack lines. I just remembered that some of our older International/KME's with more narrow cross-lay beds utlize a regular flat load.

We learned the triple lay in FF1 but our engine's speedlay beds are enclosed at the top, and too tight to work with much other than a flat lay. Just feeding hose through during a flat lay is a pain in the ass, which is why we added a trash line on the starboard side running board.
