http://www.nbc30.com/news/16644098/detail.html
Firefighters are battling a two-alarm fire at an apartment building on South Whitney Street. When fire engines pulled up at 224 South Whitney St. around 6:30 a.m. this morning, the two-story brick building was up in flames and people were hanging from the second-story windows, said Fire Chief Charles A. Teale.Firefighters, using ground ladders, rescued seven people, Teale said. The building was searched and all 19 tenants have been accounted for. One citizen and one firefighter were taken to an area hospital for unspecified injuries.
The fire may have originated in the back of the building, said Teale. About 11 fire engines are at the scene.Concerned that the flames could spread, firefighters also evacuated the apartment building next door."It is so close it could have easily caught fire," Teale said.George Alvarado said his son woke him up, yelling that the building was on fire."It looked like the sun was in wwthe apartment," he said.Destiny Chapman, 9, who lives in the building next door, said crackling noises and intense heat woke her up this morning. Her bedroom window faces the back porch of 224 S. Whitney St."I looked out the window and saw fire," she said.Chapman woke her mother, Patress Lurry who called 9-1-1 and her three-year-old sister, Trinity Lurry. The family woke some of their neighbors and left the building.
