A fast moving 5 alarm fire caused heavy damage to a very large 2.5 story Greek Revival Mansion in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. Shortly before 3:30pm, Boston Fire Alarm transmitted Box 2462 for a building fire at 1 Dane Street. First due Engine 28 reported fire showing and ordered the 2nd alarm struck. Firefighters had to evacuate the building that was being renovated due to the strong possibility of the roof collapsing. A third alarm was transmitted by Deputy Fire Chief Mager and companies went into defensive operations with ladder pipes and hand lines. A nanny was at home with 2 small children and the family dog when she noticed a worker coming in and out of the front door somewhat excited. She reported she asked what was wrong and was told "nothing don't worry about it". At that point the smoke detectors were activated and the nanny gathered the children and dog leaving the house. The renovators had been using a propane torch on the pillars of the house to remove paint. Conditions deteriorated rapidly and a 4th alarm was transmitted by Deputy Mager. Firefighters not only had to contend with difficult fire conditions but also mid afternoon heat with temperatures in the mid 80s. A 5th alarm was ordered to bring additional resources and relieve weary Firefighters. It took over 2 hours to control the fire to a point where an interior attack could be resumed to knock down pockets of fire in the eaves and walls. Three Firefighters were injured with one being transported for a cut hand. No other injuries were reported.
